CAPS Configuration Use Cases
The following are the possible scenarios for you to configure the CAPS Configuration Setting using the minimum peers, DNS suffix name, and IP address/IP ranges.
Minimum CAPS peers AND IP Address
When you define the minimum CAPS peers and IP address/range with the AND condition, CAPS must meet both requirements. This means that for Cloud Agent to start asset detection, both the minimum CAPS peers and IP address/range requirement must be fulfilled. If any of the above conditions are not met, then CAPS does not start the asset detection.
For example,
- If CAPS meets the minimum CAPS peers requirement but does not find the matching IP address on the interface, asset detection is not initiated.
- Similarly, if CAPS finds a matched IP address on the interface but does not meet the minimum CAPS peers requirement, then it does not initiate asset detection.
- CAPS begins asset detection only when it meets both the minimum CAPS peer and IP address requirements.
When you define the minimum CAPS peers and IP address/range with the OR condition, Cloud Agent displays a warning message and automatically applies the AND condition for these requirements.
Minimum CAPS peers OR DNS Suffix
When you define the minimum CAPS peers and DNS suffix name with the OR condition, CAPS starts the asset detection if any one of these requirements is met.
For example, asset detection by Cloud Agent works in the following cases:
- If CAPS meets only the minimum CAPS peer requirement
- If CAPS meets only the DNS suffix requirement
- If CAPS meets both the DNS suffix requirement & minimum CAPS peer requirement
Minimum CAPS peers OR DNS Suffix & IP Address
When you define the minimum CAPS peers, DNS suffix, and IP address with the OR condition, Cloud Agent must meet only one of the conditions.
For example, asset detection by Cloud Agent works in the following cases:
- If CAPS meets only the minimum CAPS peer requirement
- If CAPS meets the DNS suffix and IP address requirement
- If CAPS meets both DNS suffix and IP address & minimum CAPS peer requirements
In this condition, the DNS suffix specifies the domain, and the IP address/range specifies the specific assets in the domain.
When you define both the DNS suffix and IP address/range in the condition, Cloud Agent treats them as a single variable. This means if both parameters are defined, Cloud Agent must find the matching DNS suffix and specified IP address in the network to start asset detection.
Minimum CAPS peers AND DNS Suffix
When you define the minimum CAPS peers and DNS suffix with the AND condition, CAPS must meet both conditions to start an asset detection.
For example,
- If CAPS meets the minimum CAPS peers requirement but does not find the matching DNS suffix, asset detection is not initiated.
- If CAPS finds a DNS suffix but does not meet the minimum CAPS peers requirement, it will not initiate asset detection.
- CAPS will begin asset detection only if it meets the minimum CAPS peer and DNS suffix requirements.
Minimum CAPS peers AND DNS Suffix & IP Address
When you define the minimum CAPS peers, DNS suffix, and IP address/range with AND condition, Cloud Agent must meet all three requirements to start asset detection.
- If CAPS meets minimum CAPS peers and DNS suffix requirements but does not meet assets belonging to the specific IP address/range, then CAPS will not start asset detection.
- If the minimum CAPS peers and IP range requirements are met and the specified DNS suffix is not found in the network, CAPS will not start asset detection.
- CAPS will begin asset detection only if it meets the minimum CAPS peer and DNS suffix requirements.
In this condition, the DNS suffix specifies the domain, and the IP address/range specifies the specific assets in the domain.
