Scoped Tags
A scoped tag limits the set of assets that a tag can apply to. When you create a scoped tag, you select a parent tag that is within your scope, and the new tag is applied only to the assets that are already associated with that parent tag.
Without a scoped tag, a new dynamic tag is evaluated against every asset in your organization's inventory. With a scoped tag, evaluation is confined to the assets under the parent tag that you select. Even if other assets in the subscription meet the tag rule, the tag isn't applied to them. This gives you control over where a tag applies, so you can limit tagging to a specific part of your inventory without affecting the rest.
Prerequisites
- Scoped tags must be available for your subscription.
- You must be a sub-user with permission to create tags.
- At least one parent tag must exist in your account.
How the parent tag determines scope
The parent tag acts as a boundary for tag evaluation. The following table shows how the boundary is applied:

Parent tag restrictions
You cannot use the following tag types as a parent tag:
- Tags created by the system
- Asset group tags
- Tag sets
- Another scoped tag
- Tags outside your scope
- Root-level tag (static or dynamic) created by a sub-user
Important to know
Keep the following behaviors in mind before you create a scoped tag:
- A scoped tag always has a parent tag.
- A scoped tag cannot be the parent of another tag.
- Enable the Scoped Tag toggle before you select a parent tag. The Parent Tag selection window displays only eligible tags after the toggle is on. If you select a parent tag first and then enable the Scoped Tag toggle, the selection is preserved, but the scope tag conditions do not apply until the toggle is enabled.
