Troubleshooting: Microsoft Patches Deployment Failure for Patch Management

Issue Details

When you deploy Microsoft patches, you might see an error indicating that the Windows Update service could not start or has not started. When you deploy the .msu patches, You might also see an error return code 1058.

Steps to fix the issue for Windows 10

  1. Press Win + X to open the Power User menu and click Run. Alternatively, you can press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter services.msc in the Open field and click OK.
  3. Locate the Windows Update service from the list.
  4. Double-click Windows Update to open its properties.
  5. Go to the General tab and click Startup type.
  6. Choose Automatic from the list to set the service to start automatically with Windows. If the service is not running, click Start from the Service status section.
  7. Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.

For older Windows versions, such as Windows 7 and Windows 8.1:

  1. Open the Start menu, enter services.msc in the Open field, and click OK.
  2. Locate the Windows Update service from the list.
  3. Double-click Windows Update to open its properties.
  4. Go to the General tab and click Startup type.
  5. Choose Automatic from the list to set the service to start automatically with Windows. If the service is not running, click Start from the Service status section.
  6. Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.

The Windows Update service is enabled and set to start automatically with Windows.
