Troubleshoot Power BI Integration and Data Refresh Issues

This topic helps you resolve common connection and data refresh issues when you use Power BI with Qualys VMDR. Most issues fall into two categories: connection errors caused by server or network factors, and authentication errors caused by expired or incorrect credentials.

Problem 1: Connection Reset Error

You receive the following error when you pull data from Qualys into Power BI: "Error: read ECONNRESET"

Cause

Several factors can cause a connection reset: an unresponsive backend server, a blocked self-signed SSL certificate, an incorrect proxy configuration, or a request timeout.

Solution

Verify the following settings in Power BI:

  • Server response: Confirm that the backend server is running and can respond to requests.
  • Blocked self-signed SSL certificates: Disable SSL Certificate Verification under Settings > General to allow these certificates.
  • Proxy configuration: Confirm that your proxy settings are configured correctly under Settings > Proxy.
  • Request timeout: Increase the request timeout setting under Settings > General, if needed.

For more information, see the API troubleshooting guide. If the issue persists after you complete the relevant steps in the guide, submit the information requested in the guide's "Issue Still Persists" section so Qualys Support can assist you further.

Problem 2: Login Authentication Failure

You see the following error message:

"Login Error: Authentication Failed — We couldn't authenticate with the credentials provided. Please try again."

Cause

Your permissions or credentials are invalid. If you previously connected to your data source using unauthorized credentials, Power BI may have stored outdated or incorrect login information.

Solution

Verify your access rights and credentials for the data source. Then update your stored login credentials in Power BI:

  1. Open Power BI Desktop.
  2. Go to File > Options and Settings > Data Source Settings.
  3. Under Global Permissions, locate the old SQL Server data source connection.
  4. Select a data source, and click Edit Permissions.
  5. Update the credentials, as required.
  6. Reconnect to the data source, and verify that the connection succeeds.
