Installing Sensors

This topic guides you to choose, download and install a sensor based on the environment.

Go to Configurations > Sensors to view and manage sensors deployed in your environment. Optionally, you can click Download Container Sensor from the Home page to download a sensor.

Sensors Page

The Sensors page provides an overview of all sensors deployed in your account. It includes summary statistics, quick filters, and a detailed sensor list.

Summary Statistics

The top of the page displays the following summary statistics.

Statistic Description
Total Sensors The total number of sensors deployed in your account.
Search bar Use a QQL query to filter sensors.
To know all applicable QQL queries, refer to Searching for Sensors.
Last Memory Usage The number of sensors that reported high memory usage in the last scan cycle.
Low Disk Space The number of sensors that reported low disk space in the last scan cycle.

Quick Filters

Use the Quick Filters panel on the left to narrow down the sensor list. The count next to each filter value shows the number of sensors matching that value.

Filter Description
Version Filter sensors by their installed version.
Status Filter sensors by their current status (for example, Active, Unknown, and so on).
Type Filter sensors by type (for example, General, Registry, Cluster, and so on).
Assigned Profile Filter sensors by the sensor profile assigned to them. Selecting a profile name shows only the sensors assigned to that profile.

Sensor List

The sensor list displays all sensors that match the applied filters. The list includes the following columns.

Column Description
Sensor The unique identifier of the sensor and the date it was created.
Type The sensor type (for example, General, Registry, Cluster, Runtime, CICD).
Assigned Profile The sensor profile currently assigned to the sensor. Click the profile name to view its details.
Status The current operational status of the sensor and how long ago it was last reported.
Architecture The CPU architecture of the host on which the sensor is running (for example, x86_64).
Version The installed version of the sensor.
Host The IP address of the host on which the sensor is running.
Tags Any asset tags applied to the sensor.

Click Install Sensor to download and install a new sensor. The Install Qualys Container Security page appears, as shown below.

Selecting a Sensor

Choose the type of sensor you want to deploy based on your requirement. The following illustration walks you to the installation steps.

  1. Select the Sensor deployment type (environment) - Runtime, Registry, or Build.
  2. Choose the Sensor type - Cluster, Runtime, General, Registry, CI/CD, or QScanner.
  3. Select the Container environment - Cluster, or Standalone.
  4. Select the platform type - K8s, Openshift, OSs, or ECS.
  5. Choose the Installation package. Using this package, the sensor is installed  - Unified Helm chart, DaemonSet Yaml, Binary or DockerHub image. See Installing the Sensor.

The flowchart below has identified some of your requirements, and based on them, the flowchart helps you to select the sensor.

Installing the Sensor

The installation steps and system requirements vary as per the sensor configuration you have chosen in Selecting a Sensor.

For example, for a Registry sensor with Registry deployment type, having Cluster container environment, in K8s orchestration platform, you can install the sensor either using Unified Helm Chart or DaemonSet Yaml.

Whereas, for a CI/CD sensor in the Build deployment type in a Standalone environment, you can install the sensor using a DockerHub image or Binary.

Follow the on-screen installation steps to install the respective sensor in your environment.

Be sure to follow the System Requirements shown under the Installation Package. For example, for an average image size of 4GB, it is recommended to allocate 48GB of memory when using the default setting of 4 scan threads. For more details, please refer to Storage Requirements for Sensor Scans section of CS Sensor Deployment Help.

For advanced configurations and more information on the 'installsensor.sh' script command line parameters, please refer to the Qualys Container Security Sensor Deployment Help.
