Get Started with Qualys Virtual Scanner

The Qualys Virtual Scanner Appliance offers the same global scanning capabilities as our physical scanner appliance. It functions as a stateless, disposable resource that extends the Qualys Enterprise TruRisk™ Platform and is not managed separately. This user guide provides instructions on how to use a virtual scanner with your virtualization or cloud platform.

Prerequisites

To configure the Qualys Virtual Scanner for your platform, the following prerequisites must be met:

  • The Virtual Scanner option must be turned on for your account.
Contact Qualys Support or your Technical Account Manager if you would like us to turn on this option for you.
  • You must be a Manager or a sub-user with the Manage virtual scanner appliances permission. This permission may be granted to Unit Managers. Your subscription may be configured to allow this permission to be granted to Scanners.

About Managing Instances

Instance Size

The number of CPUs to allocated RAM ratio must always be 1:2, for example, 4 CPUS and 8 GB RAM.

Instance Snapshots/Cloning Not Allowed

Creating a new instance using a snapshot or clone of a virtual scanner is strictly prohibited. The new instance cannot operate as a scanner, and all configuration settings and platform registration information can be lost. This could also result in scan failures and errors for the original scanner.

Moving/Exporting Instance Not Allowed

Transferring or exporting a registered scanner instance from a virtualization platform (such as HyperV, VMware, or XenServer) to a cloud platform (including AWS, Azure, GCE, or OpenStack) in any file format is strictly forbidden. This action can irreparably damage the scanner's functionality and lead to the permanent loss of all settings.

Quick Start Steps

Here are the quick start steps for configuring the Qualys Virtual Scanner:

  1. Add Your Virtual Scanner.
  2. View Scanner Status.
