Submit and Approve Jobs
Once the Job Approval Workflow is turned on, every new job goes through two roles before it can run: a job owner or co-author who submits it, and an approver who reviews and approves or rejects it. This topic walks through both parts of the process.
Before you begin
Job Approval Workflow must be enabled in Configuration > Setup, and the reviewing user must hold the Eliminate Job Approver permission and the View Any Job permission for that job type. See Job Approval Workflow for details.
Step 1: Submit a job for approval (job owner or co-author)
- Create or edit a deployment, mitigation, isolation, or rollback job as you normally would, and step through the job wizard to Review and Confirm.
- Click Save & Enable.
- The Approval Needed to Enable dialog appears, explaining that the job now needs approval before it can be enabled.
- Click Save & Enable again to submit the job for approval right away. The job is created in a disabled state with its status shown as Pending Approval.
- Click Save instead if you want to create the job in a disabled state without submitting it yet.
- To submit a job you saved earlier (without enabling it), open the job from the Jobs list, then choose Send for Approval from the job's Actions menu.
Both the job owner and any co-author on the job can submit it, withdraw it, edit it, and resubmit it for approval.
Withdraw or edit a pending request
While a job is in Pending Approval, the owner or co-author can still make changes:
- Open the Jobs list and locate the job (its status shows Disabled – Pending Approval).
- For the required job, click Quick Actions menu and select Withdraw Approval Request to pull the job back before it is reviewed.
- Edit the job as needed, then submit it for approval again.
Step 2: Review and approve or reject a job (approver)
- Go to the Jobs list.
- Find jobs waiting on your decision using the Approval Status quick filter.
- Open the row's Quick Actions menu and select Review Job (or click the job name) to open its details.
- Review the job's Basic Information, Assets, Pre-actions, Patches, Post-actions, and Options tabs to confirm everything is correct.
- At the top of the Job Details page, click:
- Approve Job if the job is ready to run, or
- Reject Job if it needs changes and add a comment explaining why, so the owner knows what to fix.
What happens next
| Decision | Result |
|---|---|
| Approved | The job is enabled and runs on its configured schedule (immediately, for on-demand jobs). The owner sees the updated status on the Jobs list. |
| Rejected | The job's status changes to Rejected, and the approver's comment is recorded. The owner or co-author can edit the job and resubmit it for approval. |
Important to Know
- You cannot approve or reject a job that you created yourself, even if you hold the Job Approver permission; a different authorized user must act on it.
- No email notification is sent when a job is submitted, approved, or rejected in this release. Approvers should check the pending-approval count shown at login, or search regularly using the Approval Status filter.
- For an on-demand job, if approval takes longer than the job's scheduled run date, the job shows a date passed notice. Set a new date and resubmit it before it can be approved.
