Track Authorized/Unauthorized Software
Build lists of authorized and unauthorized software, then track the results across your IT environment.
Use this to
- Define the software you authorize and the software you do not.
- Report installations of unauthorized software in your environment.
- Set which rule wins when two rules cover the same software.
Why track software authorization
Tracking authorized and unauthorized software reduces security risk and improves the health of your inventory. Software rules let you:
- Track and report installations of unauthorized software against lists you define.
- Manage lists of authorized software and identify the software that is not on them.

Before you begin: A software rule selects the assets it applies to by asset tag, so create the asset tags you want to include or exclude before you create the rule.
Configure and execute the rule
A software rule marks software as authorized, unauthorized, or needs review. These topics take you through creating, prioritizing, and managing the rule:
- Create Software Rule — Name the rule, select the assets by tag, and list the software you want to authorize.
- Reorder Software Rule — Set which rule takes precedence when the same software appears in more than one rule.
- Manage Software Rule — View, edit, delete, enable, or disable the rule, and create an alert for it.
Work through these topics in order. Create the rule first, reorder it if the software it covers is also covered by another rule, and then use the rule to create an alert so that you are told about new unauthorized installations.
